I'm sure you are thinking, “Stephanie has lost her mind!” A Yeah/Yuckie list? That sounds like something kids would do and maybe it is, but today, we're going to talk about why you might want to make one of your own.
A Yeah/Yuckie list is a thought process you can go through to help you determine if you are spending your time wisely.
A while back I did a survey and setting priorities came up as #1 on the list of “how do I do it effectively?” As a result, 40 of my buddies and I pulled together the Priority Setting Special Report. Since then, I've become somewhat of a collector of techniques that others use to make sure they are focusing on the right things.
The beginning process
- Start by taking a piece of paper and drawing a line down the center.
- On the left side, top write “Moving Towards–YEAH!!”
- On the right side, top write “Moving Away From–YUCKIE!!”
Now, brainstorm! Write down everything that fits into those two categories.
Moving Towards — YEAH!!– What is your vision? What do you want to be doing more of? Maybe it is creating a new service offering or maybe it is spending more time singing in your church choir or both. Maybe it is networking more so you can land a few more clients a week… Whatever your answers, write them down.
Moving Away From —YUCKIE!! — What are you still doing that you know you ought not to be doing? Are there services that don't match your vision that you are still offering? Are you staying late and not eating dinner with your family? What is it that is eating away at you? What is it that you continually justify doing, but deep down know that you should not be doing? Write it here.
Sometimes it helps to think in terms of the emotional feeling you get when thinking about those tasks (thus, yeah and yuckie.)
Have that list? Good! Now it is time for
Step Two
Identify in those two lists the things you love to do that you need to continue to do and do them!
Identify in those two lists the things that you can't stand doing and who you could delegate them to (or ditch them altogether.)
You now have your newly formed priority list.
What did you put on your list? What are you going to eliminate from your daily todos?
